La Grange Food Mart in Crowley, LA = B+ Rated Boudin
Location: 620 S Eastern Av Crowley, LA, 70526
Ambiance: An independent grocery store/food mart across the tracks. La Grange serves the local clientele’s needs on everything to cold medicine to a hankering for a farm fresh (from Mexico) green pepper. Make your way to the right-hand side of the store and pick up the boudin at the deli.
Presentation: A smallish link wrapped in paper, placed on a piece of Styrofoam, and wrapped in plastic (too many chemicals too close to the link). You’ll be sent to one of the registers at the front of the store.
Casing: Thin, yet durable.
Rice/Meat Ratio: More rice than meat!
Texture: Similar to the link sold of the road in Mowata. Almost creamy with a gravy like juiciness to it. Pits of pork and plenty-O-rice.
Overall Taste: It is good. As already mentioned it has a gravy-like taste to it. The pork tastes almost like it came off a pork roast and then was chopped and added to a hearty rice mixture. Lots of tasty green onions and plenty of other seasonings to bolster the overall flavor.
Comments: This was one of only three places in Crowley that people told us make their own boudin. We tried to got to the “Boudin King” but he doesn’t open until 10:00 AM on a Saturday (that’s crazy!!!). Anyway, when we got the link at La Grange it was cold and they needed to heat it up for us (in the microwave we suppose). It didn’t look very good in its cold state, but once heated up it had a lot going for it. Still, this is a different breed of boudin that we find a little further east.
